How do you choose a safe pregnancy mouthwash? Fret not mums, we’ve done the research. Find out in this article!
Oral hygiene isn’t easy when you’re pregnant. More bacteria can live inside your mouth, which worsens your gum health and gives you bad breath throughout the day. It’s quite common to encounter oral cavities too.
And to top it off, sometimes you find yourself having to brush your teeth several times a day because you can’t use a mouthwash during pregnancy. But is that just a myth?
Can pregnant women use a mouthwash?
Yes! If you’re pregnant, you should use a mouthwash. Most medical organisations, such as the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advise pregnant women to use a mouthwash. Mouthwashes help to maintain dental hygiene, relieve swollen gums and prevent cavities.
In fact, the challenge you’ll probably face as a mum-to-be is actually finding a safe mouthwash. 🙁
How to choose a safe pregnancy mouthwash
As a mum-to-be, you need to take a close look at the ingredients you have in your mouthwash. Most of them (especially alcohol) won’t be safe.
Instead, you should use mouthwashes that are:
Chances are that your mouthwash uses alcohol. You should strongly consider switching to a non-alcoholic mouthwash when you’re pregnant because any amount of alcohol can easily harm your baby.
Triclosan is a very common chemical used to preserve certain products. However, it can be dangerous if you’re pregnant.
According to the National Institutes of Health, Triclosan can reduce thyroid hormones, which are very important for foetal development.
Triclosan exposure is very common among pregnant women, so it’s best to check your mouthwash and the other products you use for this chemical.
3. No artificial colouring
These dyes tend to use a multitude of chemicals, often synthetically derived. As a result, artificial dyes can easily cause irritation and trigger allergies.
As a pregnant mum, you should reduce your exposure to artificial dyes.
Mouthwashes which relieve nausea
If you’re an experienced mum, you’ll know that morning sickness is the notorious time in the first trimester where you feel nauseous (and not just in the morning).
If you’re worried about a bad morning sickness problem, don’t worry! A mouthwash can be your perfect companion.
Just make sure that you’ve chosen a safe pregnancy mouthwash first. After that, choose one with a mint flavour. (Tip: mint and citrus flavours can work wonders for your morning sickness!) 🙂

Alcohol is extremely harmful to your foetus. That’s why we’ve avoided it in our formula! Instead, we’ve used other natural ingredients to help clean your teeth and gums, like allantoin and chlorophyll.
- Mint flavour
We use mint as a natural flavouring for two reasons. Firstly, it provides a burst of minty freshness perfect for clearing your mood and freshening your breath. Secondly, it drives away your morning sickness!

Artificial dyes can contain lots of harmful toxins which affect your baby’s development. That’s why we’ve avoided them completely.
Instead, our mouthwash gets its green colour from chlorophyll. Chlorophyll also helps to naturally clean your teeth and gums without the use of harmful chemicals.
Allantoin is a great natural ingredient we use in our mouthwash, which helps to prevent irritation and gum problems.
